1. How Much Does a Conservatory Cost?

At the end of the day, there are many concerns with purchasing a conservatory, but the main question everyone wants answering is; how much will my conservatory cost?

Unfortunately, there isn’t a straight answer to conservatory pricing as not every conservatory is the same. You need to plan and research to ensure buying a conservatory is the best decision you make and not a burden for the years to come.

So, first, you need to consider…

What Will My Conservatory Be Used For?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I need extra dining space?
  • Will my conservatory be useful for family gatherings or special occasions?
  • Do I need somewhere to escape from it all, a space for relaxing; maybe a lounge or a reading room?
  • Should my conservatory be used for the children or family pets?
  • Would my conservatory be an extra bedroom in the house, that I could rent out?
  • Could a conservatory extend my kitchen?
  • Would my conservatory make a good utility room?
  • Do I see myself having breakfast, tea, catching up with friends in my new conservatory?

The thoughts are endless but knowing what you want will determine the materials that are used. According to Which? 44% of people they surveyed would change the materials used if they were choosing their conservatory again. So, this first step is the most important!

A lot of our customers wish they had known about our insulated roofing panels before installing their conservatory as it would have saved them money on heating bills, and short-term solutions problems conservatory owners have.

Although these are the main designs, some people have the luxury to choose their own bespoke design. These tend to be pricier conservatories than traditional designs.

When deciding the style of your conservatory, you must consider what will complement the style of your property as this could determine first, if you need planning permission or not, and secondly if it will add value to your property.

Always ask the company for a detailed breakdown of the costings, as it has been known for companies to provide an “estimated price” and increase it last minute.

As mentioned briefly before, a lot of people choose to invest in a conservatory because it has the potential to add value to your home. This is true, in most cases, it is advised to speak with an estate agent before making such a purchase. Their advice may determine the purpose of your conservatory and answer the question ‘what will my conservatory be used for?’.

2. Do I Need Planning Permission for a Conservatory?

Planning permission is confirmation from local authorities to build on your land. Saying this, not all building or extensions need planning permission.

You will not need planning permission if…

  • The building or extension is no more than 4 metre high
  • It will not obstruct any public spaces
  • A detached house isn’t extended to more than 4m
  • A non-detached house isn’t extended to more than 3m
  • The roof pitch of extensions higher than one storey to match existing house
  • It doesn’t include raised platforms, balconies or verandas
  • Your home isn’t listed in a conservation area

Although the previous guidelines are listed on the governing body website, it is always good to check with your local authorities about planning permission within your area.

3. How Do I Maintain my Conservatory?

Maintaining your conservatory doesn’t have to be hard work if you don’t let it. Two main concerns with maintenance are the cost and the cleaning.

How Much will my Conservatory Maintenance Cost?

It isn’t a myth that conservatories are too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, and that comes with the expense in trying to heat it. With the British weather being so unpredictable, it is likely you will spend most of the year heating it, than not. Therefore, you need to be smart when choosing the materials used.

Here at GreenSpace UK we provide insulated conservatory roofing panels which cleverly reduce the temperature in the summer, and keeps the room warm in the winter, then in turn reducing your heating and electricity bills.

How Do I Clean my Conservatory?

Like guttering, it is advised that your conservatory is cleaned twice a year, read our guide to guttering article to find out more. However, by having our GreenSpace UK roofing panels, you can reduce the time spent cleaning!

Tackling your conservatory roof isn’t as hard as it may seem. You just need the right tools and determination.

  1. You may need a ladder to get onto the roof
*Please note that if you are unable to get onto the roof, do not try. You can purchase extendable tools to help clean instead.
  2. Over time your conservatory roof will gather dirt, consisting of moss and algae. You will need to get rid of this before you start the deep clean. Using a brush will get the worst off
  3. A bucket of warm soapy water and scrubbing brush to clean the rest of the muck
