So far this year, through our Charity of the Month scheme, we’ve raised money for Dorset Mind, BUGS and Cornwall House Hospice.
Our Charity of the Month for April is The Teen and Young Adult (TYA) Ward at Southampton Hospital!
This ward is focused on looking after Teens and Young Adults with different types of cancer, leukaemia and brain tumours.
It’s run by a dedicated team of specialists who have expert knowledge and experience, and advise teams in other hospitals across the world. The nurses working on the unit have all chose to work specifically with young people with cancer and even undertake extra training to be able to do so.
The ward is one of several Teenage Cancer Trust units across the UK and has been designed by teens and young adults for teens and young adults.
The inpatient ward has free wi-fi and each room has fridges, TV’s, DVD’s games consoles and sofa beds for family/friends to stay with patients. The social space on the unit offers teens and young adults a chance to socialise with their visitors or other patients, with a pool table, gaming area and unit organised social activities available.
It allows patients 16+ to be around others of a similar age, going through similar treatments, rather than being treated on the children’s ward, or on the adult’s ward aged 18 when they may not feel quite ready or comfortable.
Throughout April we’ll be giving £5 for every sale, as well as doing some inhouse fundraising, to the TYA ward at Southampton Hospital to support their work treating and caring for Teens and Young Adults.
