We recently read in the press that ambitious government targets for a nationwide tree planting campaign may struggle to be hit.
Now, we’re very keen on doing our bit for the environment here at Greenspace - the clue is in the name, so we read the report with interest. Especially because this year, we have gone one step further and have made a major commitment to supporting the environment and mitigating our own carbon footprint by launching our #ConserveATree initiative. For this, we’ll be planting a tree for every sale throughout 2022 via our partner (more:trees) and we’ve been eagerly watching the sales total growing each day, excited to see how many trees we’ll be planting for the first quarter of the year.
After a record January, we were already up to over 180 trees and February has been equally promising. If we continue like this (and our sales forecast suggests we will), we should be on track to hit 500 trees in Q1and be well on our way to our ambitious target of 2,500 trees in 2022. Wouldn’t that be awesome?
The news couldn't have come at a better time either, after the head of National Audit Office recently claimed that the Government “did not sufficiently consider if tree-planting targets for this year are realistic”. It said the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) looked set to miss its aim despite working quickly to set up schemes - it has big goals to plant at least 7,500 hectares of trees every year by spring 2025. We are not here to have a political debate, just to be a part of the solution and to do what we can, where we can. Hopefully our 2,500 can be the start and maybe even inspire other organisations to try similar ideas.
