We love our conservatories. They allow us to enjoy our gardens with all the comforts of an indoor living space, and they can add value to our homes.
To make the most of your conservatory, though, you need to clean the exterior regularly as well as keep the inside clean.
Keeping the outside of your conservatory clean can be a daunting job, with large areas of glass and places that are difficult to reach constantly accumulating dirt, dust, and bird droppings.
You can find out here how to make cleaning your conservatory exterior easier and how to do it safely.

Tools and equipment for cleaning conservatory exteriors

Certain tools and equipment make it safer and easier to clean the outside of a conservatory. These include:

  • A good-quality stepladder or ladder (and someone to hold it steady while you’re on it).
  • Bucket of warm soapy water.
  • Bucket of clean water for rinsing.
  • Sponge or microfibre cloth.
  • Squeegee.
  • Telescopic brush.
  • Hosepipe.
  • A wastepipe cleaner if the downpipe from your conservatory gutter is blocked.

How to clean your conservatory roof
Unlike the roof on your house, a conservatory roof isn’t designed to be load bearing. Never attempt to clean it by standing, walking or crawling on it, or even leaning on it. Instead, work from a ladder, using a telescopic brush and hot soapy water.
After using the telescopic brush, use a garden hose to rinse the roof. Don’t be tempted to use a pressure washer, which can damage sealings and force water through ventilation areas.
At least three-quarters of your conservatory roof will be glass or translucent material. If you’re struggling to keep a glass conservatory roof clean, you may want to think about replacing it with aluminium panels, which are a lot easier to clean and also keep your conservatory cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

How to keep conservatory gutters and downpipes clean
Conservatory gutters need to be cleaned out twice a year. You’ll need a secure ladder or stepladder. Remove twigs, leaves, moss and any other organic matter that’s accumulated in the gutter.
Clear away any debris that may be blocking the top of the gutter downpipe. If there’s a blockage in one of the angled couplings of the downspout, you may need a wastepipe cleaner or something like a flexible twig to loosen the obstruction so you can clear it. (The same goes for the couplings at the bottom of the downpipe).

How to clean your conservatory window exteriors
At least half of your conservatory wall space will be glass, and dirty windows will spoil the view of your outside space.
Clean your conservatory windows when there’s no direct sunlight shining onto them. Otherwise, you’re likely to get streaks and water spots as they dry, especially in hard-water areas.
Use warm soapy water with a telescopic brush or a sponge to clean debris and dirt from the windows. Wipe the glass down with clean water and a microfibre cloth to get rid of any smears, and then use a squeegee to remove excess water.

Do you need to clean self-cleaning glass?
If you have a conservatory roof and windows with self-cleaning glass, bear in mind this isn’t as magical as it sounds.
Although self-cleaning glass stays cleaner longer, it still needs to be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft cloth or a pure-water cleaning system from time to time.
Don’t scrub self-cleaning glass or use a squeegee or harsh chemicals. This can damage the coating.

Benefits of keeping your conservatory exterior clean
Cleaning your conservatory exterior every few months can help prevent leakage and damage and allow maximum penetration of light to make the space feel airier and more open.
Regular cleaning of your conservatory will not only keep it looking spick and span and visually appealing but can also extend the lifespan of the structure.
And when the outside of your conservatory is clean, you’ll know that any remaining stains and smudges on windows can be dealt with from the inside.

Conservatory exterior cleaning dos and don’ts
Here’s a quick recap of what to do and what not to do when cleaning the outside of your conservatory.

  • Do clean your conservatory exterior at least once every six months.
  • Do make sure you have the right equipment and tools.
  • Do clean your conservatory in overcast weather.
  • Don’t climb onto your conservatory roof.
  • Don’t use spirit-based or harsh chemical cleaning products.
  • Don’t use abrasive cleaning materials.
  • Don’t use a pressure washer.
  • Don’t forget to clean your conservatory guttering.
